Just a quick question, I just got my parts for Digikey for my ZVS driver, but I accidentally ordered 200mw SMT zeners instead of normal ones. I feel like I am capable of mounting them, but I don't know if they will stand up to the circuit.

They should only handle an extremely small fraction of the power input, since all they are doing is signaling the MOSFETS, but then again I don't know how to calculate the power dissipation on one of these.

Will they work, and if so up to around how much power?

This is like the 3rd time I've accidentally bought SMT parts, I've gotta start checking the package type more carefully...

I used those little smd zeners on my first zvs, and they did work.
In any case, you can calculate the power of each zener by considering that the gates are being driven at a 50% duty cycle, to the voltage that the 470r resistors are at, through a 470r resistor. So if you are powering it at 12v and using a 10.7v zener, that is about 25mw.

Thanks, good to know I'm ok using them, Because I have no spares and I didn't want to have to order just a few diodes from someone.

29 and a half hours later...

Also my inductor is 135 turns of 24 ga (.51 mm) wire on a medicine bottle. I'm worried that it wont stand up to the full 10+ Amps. I will be air cooling the entire setup, but I would rather not have it melt or something.

The only reason it is air core is I have only ferrite toroids, which i hear are bad in the ZVS. I would have used an iron nail or rod, but I cant calculate a value because I do not know the relative permittivity of solid iron.

The current inductor is 1.25" dia, 2.5" winding length, calculated to around 200uH. Resistance is 1 ohm.

Will this work?

PS, soldering those SMT zeners was a b**ch; I was sure I destroyed them (25 watt soldering iron) but the multimeter says thumbs-up. I just hope they hold.

If you have/find any dead PSUs from a computer then you could find a toroid that is sutible for ZVS use inside it. I think the wire would be fine. I tuned my ZVS flyback driver and I'm drawing 8.5A @ 12V. I think the 10A is for head room so you don't melt anything. The wire shouldn't melt but if it has insulation on it then it might get soft or melt. The inductor doesn't have to be exact but you would want to get close to 200uH or higher.

That's really great because I've been using 2 235 watt PSUs as bookends for like a year. I got them at a yard sale w/ the wires cut off; I knew I'd find a use for them (besides holding books). I have some 20 gauge magnet wire, and some 14 and 12 gauge hookup wire, so I'll see if I can switch to something thicker now that I will have an iron core.

I'm gonna go crack one open right now.
