Hi there, I'm new to this board, and I want to present what I am working on.
I had the possibility to use IGBT halfbrige-bricks rated 600A and 600V with 1200A pulsed. So I decided to build a big DRSSTC. I use 4 of these (2 in parallel) to bulid my fullbrige. So I have 2400A pulsed current rating of my bridge. I designed the control electronic by myself, and wounded a PVC pipe with a diameter of 40cm, total hight 1.75m with 0.75mm wire.
Perhaps a bit oversized, but I liked to build this big coil =)
The topload is just temporary like you can see on the pictures, I ordered aluflex, so soon it will be much nicer ;)
I have still to do a lot.... At the moment: Lacquer the sekcoil, peakcurrentdisplay, toroid and primarycoil have to be rebuild...
I get sparklengths to 1.70m, but the bridge is still keeping cool, and it can take much more, I will test that the next weeks.
Here a picture of the bridge:
And here a picture of the pipe:
And here two sparkpictures:
On my website are more detailed infos (only in german, sorry), pictures and videos:
I hope that i will get 3m long sparks soon ;)
If there are new infos of this project I will post here!

Welcome - That's quite a first post!
(much better than the usual first post of "Who can give me plans for an EMP bomb?"!)
Looking at the 'scope shot on your website; It seems that the effective primary resistance is providing output current limit (the envelope of the ring-up flattens-off) So I guess you could use the IGBTs in a full-bridge if required.
Looks like some major ozone layer replenishment is due!

Sorry, I wrote halfbridge, but i wanted to write fullbridge! These bricks are a halfbridge each, and i put 2 in parallel for each side of the fullbridge.. I corrected it in my first post.
You are right, the primary is (like a lot of things) just temporary, copper tube is ordered to build a nice one!

That's some brute power you've got there. I never get it where some people get the money from to build such cool tesla coils. Could you share the schematic of the control electonics?

An update for my project! Today we tested some new things (like a new toroid again), and it was really successful.
A few hits into the ground were about 3.6m away from the outpreak-point! =) The fotos I post now don't show that long sparks, but I will post them tomorrow.
The upper picture is color-corrected with PhotoShop, and a 4s exposure.
Have fun with the pictures!
p.s.: We allways blew up the 32A 3-phase powerline when the coil was running at full power and hit the "target"!! fun ;) So these pictures are NOT at full power!

Now that's truly impressive. Those ground strikes almost look like a plasma torch. Hope you'll hit the 4 meter mark soon. Where did you get those igbt's from?

I build this coil in our university, and the IGBTs were inventory of a laboratory. The university gets electronic components from a company wich the university cooperates with... When they are developing something and parts are not used, they give them away (most to us) after a period of time...
So it was just luck that we had IGBTs like that! =)
