Unknown diode

So I have these diodes I picked up at a surplus place. I've exhausted my normal routes for getting info on a part: google, octoparts, rell, digikey, mouser, ebay, surplussales, etc. No hits on any of them :(

So I was hoping someone here with an innate knowledge of all parts might know more about these.

The diodes are long block diodes, with female screw terminals at each end, top and bottom. About 1x1x7"

They're marked:

SLD 37.5CA
6906

it _MIGHT_ say SLD 37,5CA but it's a little faded.

they're very similar to what's sold on ebay as 15-30kv diodes in the .25ma range.


Anyways... if nothing else I'll just sacrifice one to the NST gods and figure it out on my own... but I'd like to give them a chance here first :)

I believe a lot of transient voltage protectors end in "CA" but if you think its a HV diode then this is likely not the case.

Why not run a test on one? First give it a reverse bias test. Connect a high voltage supply to it through a 1MEG resistor. Measure the voltage across the diode and turn up the supply until the diode begins to clamp.

Next, you could do a forward current test where you start with a few 10's of mA and let it "cook" until it gets pretty hot (this gives you some idea of the current capability).

2 easy tests you can do with some basic supplies.

If you need to know reverse recovery time, thats another story. It is measurable, but not easily.

Thanks Steve, that's exactly what I'll do. The reasons I think it's a HV diode is a) there is a diode schematic marking on it b) the place I got it from is notorious for having one-off HV parts from the Sandia Z machine and other such projects...

It's nice to get hand me downs from weird places like Sandia Labs and LANL.

Of course you have to check everything with a Geiger counter, and half the stuff is unmarked.

And not everything is what it first seems.
