I'm intending on making my own HeNe laser power supply. I would like for it to be suitable for a range of lasers too. Basically I will have a saw tooth generator that will be the resonance frequency of the flyback xformer I will use. Then that sawtooth wave will be feed to a comperator. Now I will use a current sensing transformer on the HV side that will be connected to the laser. The output of the current transformer will basically be feed to the comperator. Now between the sawtoooth wave and the voltage of the current transformer, those two will set the duty of the circuit so the laser would draw the proper amount of current. Also when there is a very low voltage in the current transformer that will trip another comperator that will increase the supply voltage being feed to the flyback's primary winding so it can produce about 10kV. Otherwise when there is a decent amount of current present the comperator will be off and the voltage supplied to the primary winding will be enough so it produces about 1.2kV to run the laser.
Does this sound like a good idea for a decent laser driver?

For my HeNe laser I use a flyback transformer driven by a mosfet and a 555 the output of the flyback is rectified and 'smoothed' with 10nF 12kV MMC the dc goes to the laser via a 100k 'ballast' resistor.
It works well because the 555/mosfet/flyback produce constant power throughput, so the dc voltage rises very quickly to 'ignite' the laser (no need for trigger transformer etc.) then runs the laser at the correct constant voltage/current/power continuously. (adjust 555 on/off times for required laser current)
I think your scheme is over-complex and does not provide a nice continuous dc current Google for "sam's laser faq" for loads of useful info.
