Hi

I got a huge welding transformer for free wich is rated at 63V/180A or 34V/180A
Its 2 or three phase so 230v or 380v 3 phase. its really heavy, say 70pounds or more. So, what can i do with it. The transformer looks great and is fully functionable but i have no use for it, except put it in and melt some metal with it or so.. first i thought of unwindíng it and rewinding it to a 8kVa 230/230V transformer for my lab,.. so, what do you think

Very large array of LEDs, melt thin wires, or have fun with steel wool?

EDIT:A very large paper weight?

you can melt 8mm thick copper wire with it, not thin wire or so :P

Pinch grip training, or try doing some cleans or snatches with one hand

Haha, is nrhoades suggesting using it as some sort of dumbbell? smile Good idea I guess, but it doesn't really make use of its transformer-like qualities.

It won't give enough current for spot welding, you need several kA for that. If I were you, I'd try rewinding it as a high voltage transformer. Big HV transformers are much easier to make than small ones: there's room to use thicker wire, and the large core induces more volts per turn, so you don't need so many turns to get a high output voltage.

It all adds up to huge spectacular arcs for less winding effort, and I guess you can still even use it as a dumbbell if you want to. However, 4hv recommends you consult with your physician before starting any exercise program :P

I would say it surely will if rewound, 8kW is more than enough for a big spotwelder considering people make small spotwelders out of single mot's and smaller transformers.

Spotwelders only need few volts and can easily get massive currents.
You would only need few additional turns of massive busbar, if you are lucky you can even fit that in without destroying original winding.

I would rather ask, do you really need such a huge spotwelder?

Mh, no, . i dont need a spotwelder. btw it would be good to have one when imight need it, but the transformer is too heavy..

i made a pic

The Primary is wound with say 1,6mm wire. the secondary is Copper bar nylon enameled 10x7mm 70mm²

Yes... my office mate and I found this old 30lb power transformer and we've been pinch-grip training with it during bored lulls in the day. We also have an APC uninterruptable power supply lifting contest in my friends office.
