Is there any danger in mounting large electrolytic capactiros on their sides? will the electrolyte stay in place or will it run to the sides?

Nope this the orientation shouldn't matter on any electrolytic capacitor. You can mount them in any direction you choose.

That is true, but make sure there is a gap next to the vent to allow electrolyte to spray out if for any reason the capacitor was to fail.
