I have some left over extra parts from my project I just finished up today (battery powere battery charger 2 AA's to 5v USB connection)
Its a 5A 36 uH inductor, but it is contructed as to 18uH inductors wrapped on the same torid. In the datasheet, it gives the schematic symbol for it as a transformer, but with a note, that for an inductor, connect pins 2 and 4.
If I were going to be making a HV cap charger, is there some topogy using a 1:1 transformer that would have better performance as a boost converter, vs if I just seriesed the windings to make a large inductor and used it as that?

With high input/output voltage difference high-ratio isolation transformer would definitely make for better efficiency because you could use lower voltage mosfets as switches wich generally have much lower Rds-on. (half forward or bridge.) 1:1 transformer wouldn't make any difference except making the circuit more complex.
Regarding your inductor, it looks really tiny for something that should boost from few volts to 400volts with decent power and sane frequencies. Several hundred uH would be right ballpark.

Hah, guess I was jumping the gun a bit there, though I guess I could use this inductor for some other lower voltage project.
