I was thinking about the small underground explosion experiments I have carried to take some nice photos. What would happen if I plant a microphone, say 1 mt from the explosion source? Would I be able to detect reflections from, say, house basement, water pipes, bedrock? It would be a cool experiment. Is there a theory , or a model , I can use to detect these things? Of course my setup is fairly unrepeteable, since the explosions cannot be reproduced exactly.

Would you care to explain your setup for photographing underground explosions? I take it you blow up some dirt and take a picture of it falling down? Anyway, rearding your question; sure you could pick up "something", the difficulty would be in interpreting what you are picking up. In order to infer some kind of spacial structure (not just a dumb distance measurement) you would need an array of microphones. Most of the work would then be in the data analysis, but I am fairly sure that with the required programming skills even a fairly simple setup could get you "useful" data.
