So I've been messing around with coil guns for a little while now. I'm collecting parts for my first 'official' gun (up until now they've been kinda ghetto creations). Anyway, I'm wondering what kind of circuit would be best for charging 400v caps in a reasonable time. I was thinking of just using a cascade but I don't know if that can cause any issues or if there is just something better I can make.

I suggest you to use this design, but without a control circuit for simplicity: Tuned properly, it's very efficent. Here is a picture of it, using 22mm POT core and frequency around 90kHz it lights up 60w bulb.

What voltage are you charging from? And how much power do you need?
The circuit for charging the cap from 240v mains is a lot different that one to charge it from a 1.5v AA battery... Same for charging a single photoflash cap or 10kj bank...
