Well I have been watching a few threads here, some from CM and his Ion collector, plus the Ambient Energy contest we have going, to other threads about rectennas and such. Well in a week or less I am going to be a single man again with a new apartment and lots fo walls to repaint. I had a crafty Idea.
I know it would be possible, but would there be any practical reason to line my walls with very thin wire and then paint over it? I live in the center of a VERY large city, and everyone has wireless this and that, 2 cell phones and what have you. Would the ambient EM energy be anything worth collecting besides lighting a few LEDs? I figure I must have about 40 to 50 square meters of wall to paint. I would be in no hurry. I know I will have plenty of time. Thanks for the help.

Instead of lining the walls, you'd probably find it much more rewarding to wind a nice big L and use an air-dielectric variable capacitor to see if it'll resonate with any incoming radiation... then go with a joule-thief-esque circuit and run a nightlight or something =P

ok! Looks like I got my answer. Not only would it harm my own communication ability, which I didn't think about, but for my effort, I would pull maybe 1 watt. Maybe. IF I get lucky, maybe 2! So it seems the best way to absorb ambient energy is to put a small solar panel in my window. I get sun all day through those. Thanks everyone for the info. I have decided NOT to painstakingly line my walls with small wire. I think I might modify my stationary bike then to generate power.
If anyone is curious as to why I am going to these lengths to make extra electricity, well, I'm bored. I want to see what I can do.
