I know there are many kinds of motors, but I am not the most familiar. What type of motor would be found in a submersible aquarium pump or filter, were the coils are enclosed in the waterproof unit and the rotor which is easily removable for cleaning (attached directly to impeller) is ferromagnetic (the one I am looking at is solid) and is submersed in water.
Just curious.
And would this type of motor be effected by running off a cheap auto power inverter (modified sine wave) versus regular house AC. One of the reasons I ask is since some others on an aquarium forum I belong to are discussing back up options for the aquarium when power goes out. Thanks for any info.

It's a shaded-pole motor with a permanent magnet for the rotor.
A modified sinewave inverter should work - BUT the motor will run a little hotter. (not too much of a problem since it's submersed in water)

Thanks for the info. Though I have a generator, I just wanted to see what would happen from an inverter so I tried it, and everything seems to work but noticeably louder.
