For an H bridge motor driver for a robot (each motor is 12V, and draws 4A) I am planning on using IRF520 mosfets (rated for 10A, 100V). The bridge will not be PWM, just on or off in either direction. In order to turn the mosfets off when the switch is turned off, would it work to put a ~1k resistor inbetween the gate and source to discharge the gate capacitance? Or would this take too long?

Yes, you can use a 1k resistor across the gates for this job. The thing I am more worried about is how you are going to drive the high side fets, as they require vcc+10v to turn on...
