I am in the process of reverse engineering a Brushless ATX PSU fan, since I think it is kind of neat to drive a brushless motor with just three active components, two resistors, capacitors and a diode. Two of the active components are transistors, the third is also three-legged and the same size, but flat instead of half-round. It is marked 6851 4.70 Does anyone have a clue what this component is? I am very fond of simple ciruits (since I dont understand the complicated ones ), and I'm sure this super-simple DC->AC converter can be useful for many other things!

The 'three legged flat component' is a Japanese hall effect sensor
The circuit I have in one book here uses 4 transistors and 2 halls. I can scan or redraw it for you if you wish, although it's nothing special.
Here, it seems that single hall controls two transistors, but it's still enough for motor to work.
Hall turns adjecent coils on and off as the rotor spins creating a spinning magnetic field. So the motor actually works like a 2-phase synchronous motor.

Oh, that's pretty cool, so the driver is sophisticated enough to even use a hall sensor I thought that it was just a really simple driver generating a fixed frequency and hoping for the rotor to keep up, without any position feedback.
You are right that is is just a two phase motor btw, it just has four poles on the stator. Is the schematic you have got for a three-phase driver? Then I would really be interested.
Do you happen to know what the pinout of a generic Hall sensor would be?

Thanks for the two links, both were useful for me. I wonder how well it works do drive brushless DC motors like this at higher power levels. I've got this little electric toy car which I wanted to convert to brushless for ages, but I could not be bothered to make/buy a proper driver for it.
