Hi, I recently got a tektronix 442, it's a 60MHz dual channel CRO. I think*
Problem is that only Ch2 works. Ch1 trace for whatever reason does not show, no matter how I play with the position knob. When I use beamfinder, the trace appears out of nowhere, and it disappears as soon as I let go. XY and Diff mode still works, I guess(hope) the damage is isolated to Ch1 only.

Any ideas?
Or am I wasting my time.

Never had problems with a scope but if you have a manual you could reset the settings. That's what I do when I loose a trace. You just have to recalibrate it later.

If you go to the yahoo group tekscopes, all they do is fix and play with old scopes. You might be able to find your answer there.

its a single electron gun scope, not a true dual trace scope.

Myke: it's an analog CRO.

anyways, I will get back to it when I have time.

same with me it is an anologue scope. turn all dials to left but don't turn it on. have all the buttons out. then change it so it would be set up for normal operation.

If you see the beam with Ch1 pressed but can't get the input's DC or AC to respond correctly I would guess it is the attenuator. If you don't see the beam at all when you press Ch1 (which is what I think you are saying) my first guess is that the switch selector is broken. If you open the scope see if you can test the switch for continuity

It sounds like you have a bad vertical amp on CH1. Do the X-Y and differential modes really work correctly? ie, with both scope probes clipped to the same signal, you should see no signal in differential mode, and a signal twice as big in add mode.
