Every once in a while I get interested in ham radio again. This is one of those times. I think the problem is that I like to build things and learn things, but their functionality isn't very useful to me. Take APRS, a system for position reporting via radio and GPS.
I installed xubuntu on a 1.3GHz AMD Duron w/512MB of RAM that I had kicking around my room; it's now running xastir, which talks to my modded kantronics kam (some hardware and software hacks have made it a functional equivalent of a kam plus). The TNC controls a little 5W handheld rig, which is connected to a 2m ringo ranger on the side of my house. I'm thinking about getting a mast to put the antenna on, but it's doing fine for now.
My setup seems to be fairly capable - I've tracked Canadian stations 300 miles away from my location in southern Maine. For some reason, I don't seem to be able to see much to the West. I think it might have to do with my antenna's location (the east side of my house).
The red dots are the station's reported points. It appears to have changed directions and followed route 1, and it's flying quite low. Is that a manned balloon? Who would be flying a balloon in Maine in January? I'll have to look into that a little...

I reccomend xastir highly, give it a shot using a soundcard tnc and an audio cable from your radio (you'll have to do a bit more to be able to transmit though.) I compiled the latest stable version with support for every flavor of map it can handle, and festival speech synthesis for audio updates.
