I can't find any E-laminations on Ebay for the size I need. Anyone know where I can purchase them? With regards to a scrap transformer that I have does anyone have suggestions how to take the varnished laminations apart without destroying them? SHould I heat them to melt the varnish?

What ive done in the past is compress the laminations in the bench vise a bit, then slide a knife around the outside to crack the varnish and remove the I piece. It's harder to get the E out, and sometimes you have to damage the first 2 by 'chisiling' them out, but after that, its just a slide of the knife and a twist, and the plates let go. Do that about a hundred times, and you have a shelled transformer.

I have been able to get them apart by heating the whole thing on a hot plate, the varnish will soften when it's hot. Just be careful not to get it hot enough to start darkening the enamel, or releasing any magic smoke.

Just to follow-up, I built my own transformer. I converted a 120v to 12.6v/6A transformer to a 120v to 70v CT and 10v CT. Both secondaries can handle the amps I need and it works well and silently.
