Hi all.
Would anyone know of the best way to cut this resin? a while back I built an HV multiplier (20 stages total :- approx +/-150KV output) but unfortunately it developed a bad capacitor somewhere in the stack :(
My plan is (as the two stages are in inverse parallel) to cut it into two sections then test each separately. With a bit of luck I can locate the bad parts,invert one section and then build a +250KV multipler from the good parts that are left.
I have:- "extra large cut-off disks" from B&Q, a Dremel, a hacksaw, and quite a few cutting implements.

The styrene resin is very brittle unlike a lot of epoxies, so you may be able to chisel big pieces off if you're careful. If you're not careful, while it breaks off it may shear your wiring and contacts. The resin will break off away from large components like capacitors around the outside, but likely will not let go of the wires. You may end up shearing off the leads short.
I would probably try striking the outside with firm but gentle glancing blows to take away the majority, with a combination of chisiling away from the components. Then go in with a dental like burr for the detail work.
This probably isn't the 'best' way to do it, but maybe it will help with some ideas.

There's always one; and it's often me. It may be possible to strip the polystyrene with some solvent. Remind me when I sober up and before you destroy stuff.

Yeah, thanks everyone. In the end I used the "cut both sides then split" trick but it didn't work 100%. Hopefully one of the two multipliers should be OK though. -A
