while i was searching for some new ideas to drive my large igbt bricks i found an interesting paper about gate drive techniques etc,

One thing I noticed was that it never mentioned driving all 4 transistors from a single gdt... Maybe we have things all wrong and should split our bridges in half and use 2 gdt's, as opposed to stacking a whole bunch of drivers to get a single gdt to do it. confused

If only I wasn't an 8 hour drive from my lab...

one interesting thing is to use a pnp transistor to turn off the mosfet/igbt. with this circuit the driver only needs to source the power for the turn on and you get faster turn off times, and it works cheesey

Today at work I dug up a schematic of a full bridge of mosfets used to drive a 100KHz ferrite core transformer in flyback mode. The bridge is part of a redundant module that goes inside of some awesome power supplies. The bridge uses IXYS 50 amp mosfet. I think they are 50n something.

Anyway I noticed they had and interesting gate drive method and I thought it might be worthwhile to try it out for a TC. The company I work for now makes some very beefy power supplies for pretty much any type of application. Some supplies are around 30KW! I attached a screen shot of the gate drive method used. It looks similar to some of the things on that article. This bridge used two gate drive transformers in exactly the way we have been using them for coils. The gate drive Xfrmrs only had 6 turns on them. Someone should give this a try. I might try it myself if i don't get too lazy this weekend
