Fibreoptics and sunlight

While many of the 4HV members are snowed/fogged in I thought this might bring a little warmth.
I found an old dental fibreoptic unit for UV curing of dental bonding agents. Normally run from a halogen lanp and a UV filter. In the same box I had a 6 inch quality first surface spherical mirror. This gives about 0.0088 sqr meter area. Sunlight is about 1kW per sqr meter so about 8.8W of light available. Compare that with a laser of similar power for burning ability. It burns wood very smartly.
Focussed very roughly on the end of the fibreoptic it gives enough power out the other end to give a rapid large hole in black plastic.

That's cool. I wondered if an IR soldering 'gun' could be made of those fiber cables, if enough power is pumped into it with large infrared bulbs. Bulbs are much trickier to focus than sunlight, though...

As you increase the diameter you will want a long focal length to allow th fiber to accept the light

This was just a quick test and I rapidy melted and charred the entry point of the plastic fibres. Still interesting while it lasted. It would be interesting to get that power down a proper optical fibre link.
