For the second year running I have held an open day at my home and have sent invites to the neighbours. The main aim is to inform then that the noises emanating from my place are not gunshots, and that I am "friendly". It doesn't really matter if they don't come but it is a good way to inform them. Only a few turned up but with various others mainly work collegues, there were aver 20 people including kids and a BBQ was included. I am not really trying to make this a super display but it was fairly easy to do.
My displays included:
Tesla coil with 4 foot sparks
Exploding steel wool
Can crushing
Argon laser 40mW with lissajous figure display
Nitrogen laser (failed me in my hour of need due to a disconnected wire)
HeNe 10mW
Ignition coil sparks 3 inches
Lifter
HV Supply 80kV ZVS/Flyback/Multiplier. (blew up with a nice demonstration of letting the smoke out through a red hot IGBT which I lremained red as I let itrun for the display of about 30 secs)
Mini Tesla coil to put a Flouro tube up to. Safe and enjoyed by the kids.
Magnetic disc levitation and Thompsons coil levitation of an Al ring.
Hand held NIB magnets. A 1 inch NIB secured in a 6 inch PVC tube end makes it safe and two of them cannot be pushed together even by strong people.
Ferrofluid
Hand held coil gun
Larger coilgun (1.5kJ)
Railgun (I didn't run these)
Geiger counter demonstrating alpha, beta and gamma sources and Background radiation.
Beginners Ignition coil setup.
Vortex generator. Ever popular
CRO with speaker for microphone to show sounds.
Diamagnetic levitation
Simple 12V supply with lots of things for it to hook up to.
Plasma ball and small levitated globe (commercial ones)
My electronic pyramid
Liquid nitrogen with the dip your hand in trick, banana hammer and rose smashing.

Since it was a one man show I had no time for photos until cleanup time. Some shots below. The HV equipment was all plugged in individually for each demonstration for safety reasons but people and kids seemed to respect the danger strip.

Has anyone done similar?

Peter
