I've built a Buck-Converter Step Down circuit (see diagram). However, the transistor is replaced with a HV sparkgap. This circuit converts the HV spark that jumps the gap every few seconds into LV energy that is stored in the capacitor. Question: Where conservation of every microamp in the capacitor counts, anyone care to suggest which style LV capacitor is best suited to receive and efficiently store 'pulsed' energy? Electrolytic, Tantilum, ceramic, foil, poly...etc??? Thanks. CM

To make such a circuit work efficiently at kilovolt range you are going to need impractically large coil considering you operate it at just few to few tens of Hertz.
Capacitor must also be very large, athough type isn't very relevant.
Relaxation-rsonant converter (ala tesla coil) with a step-down transformer still seems as a best idea for me.
I can try to lash up something here and see if it would work...

Thanks very much! I hope this next sentence isn't prohibited, if so, pls forgive me monitor. If your relaxation-resonant converter ends up helping me, I will be happy to compensate you for your efforts. CM

your circuit looks the correct choice;
I would not go for a typical Tesla coil in reverse because the electrical energy (charge) stored at high voltage would dissipate as heat/light/sound/radiowaves long before the Tesla Coil capacitance could accept the charge.
To efficiently catch a spark you need near-zero stray/intrinsic capacitance. So a Tesla coil without a topload would be better, but still not perfect. Look at crystal radio coil winding techniques for high-Q low-capacitance coil design.
The diode self-capacitance will likewise need to be as small as possible.

I didn't say it to be a tesla coil, but rather a ferrite transformer, maybe a flyback operating in reverse. Secondary would ring with his collector's capacitance and core would make sure that most energy gets transferred before it's lost.
I said 'ala tesla coil' to clarify principle of operation, nothing else.
There was already discussion about that and such seems best soltion of this problem.
