I liked the winding wire, but;
. a quick calculation gives about 0.125% efficiecy ?
(4mm dia x 20mm steel = 2g @ 50 m/s vs 3mF @ 1200V)
. it's nice when theory and practice coincide, but the design seems impractical therefore unrealistic.
. the rate of change of inductance during acceleration is low so:
. lots of energy will need to be recovered from the coil
- the nett force acting on the projectile will be (relatively) low
- giving low overall energy transfer
based mainly on reading, with a tiny bit of experimenting.

Mounting the coil and projectile on an axial force transducer may be useful ?
(must be immune to / shielded from the huge dB/dt etc.)

I don't know what kind of 'school' you mean,
but to me, 'school' studends should not be encouraged to play with 3mF 1.2kV capacitor banks.
much higher energy than a defibrilator !

Your video does not show efficiency. Math does, in this miserable world.
