Hi All!
I'm currently exploring various low cost options to creating x-ray radiation... Don't need anything super powerful at all.
I'm leaning towards the "tried and true" method of using a vacuum tube like a 2x2 or 1S2A since they're relatively simple to get and very cheap.
I've also read that magnetrons might potentially be viable as well, though they're certainly larger and bulkier than a small vacuum tube.
I don't think I need a super focused source of x-rays, since my target is going to mainly be seeds for experimentation. Not photography or anything.
Additionally, yes, I understand the dangers of x-ray radiation; that's why I'm going to go overboard and make a thick lead box to house the radiation producing parts. I want to primarily be safe, after all.

If you can use low doserate x-rays then an Americium insert from a smoke alarm/detector may be sufficient. Am decays emitting alpa particles, but the decay chain includes x-ray emmisions. You can measure the x-ray doserate with your G-M tube, that you use to check for the safety of your setup.

I've actually acquired a real X-ray tube from a dental head that I need to take apart at some point. Very kindly donated to me via a friend of a friend. Has a lot of oil and a SMPS of some variety for the transformer! Very interesting, so it must be a "newer" variety.
