The current in the ground wire is approximately the same as the current from the topload, so resistance is not normally a significant problem, i.e. normal domestic insulated cable is ok. but length of wire from TC to earth can be a problem due to inductance causing fairly high voltages end-to-end. It is not a bad idea to have more than one route to earth for safety considerations.

Hello i just saw this topic, an i am wandering is it ok to have my sgtc ground wire connected to wall sockets ground. It is a relatively small tc about 3 cm wide and 25 high.

for a small sgtc I would connect all 'earth' points in the primary circuit to mains earth, I like a local ground for the secondary circuit, strike rail and bottom of secondary, either an earth rod or a conductive surface such aluminium cooking foil, then join primary mains earth to secondary ground.
H/D = 25/3 = 8.333 it will of course work, but generally H/D half of that is better.

hmm i think i am gatting pretty good results for the power i am putting in. my zvs runs on 120 wats of power and i get nice looking arcs of almost 13-15 cm. I think i cant do any better than that with 120 wats.
Also i didnt quite understand the thing with primary side. Why should primary circuit be grounded?

I meant that any part of the primary circuitry that is considered to be at ground potential should be connected to mains earth for (relative) safety. e.g. the centre-tap and case of an NST, centre electrode of safety spark gap etc.
on the secondary side: base of secondary, strike rail and 'chicken stick' go directly to physical earth.
I would connect mains earth to physical earth to reduce unexpected current pathways, also, having everything at mains = physical earth makes oscilloscope ground considerations simpler.
