** Add your Tesla coil here **

1139251665 10 FT0 Tesla 7ft393

This is the Tesla coil list where you can show your coil and compare with others. There were 200 posts on the old 4HV forum which are here at old.4hv After 211 posts it contains around 164 different coils. There are 92 spark gap coils (SGTC), 54 solid state coils (SSTC) and 17 vacuum tube coils (VTTC). (Of these 90+47+16 respectively were from the old board at 200 posts.)

The 3 Rules to keep it consistent and readable:
Each coil to have only 1 page of info (ie fits on your computer screen). Brief is best.
Each coil to have only 2 photos (do not double post for the second photo).
Only coil details and photos to be posted. Direct any queries direct to the person or in a new thread.

A coil is defined by its secondary (change of toroid isn't a new coil)
Enter as many coils as you wish. Beginners coils are welcome and this log is designed to be helpful for beginners.

This is my very first tesla coil ever. Its a standard run-o-the-mill open loop full-bridge based SSTC running from 120VAC (half-rectified)

This is the coil that began it all.

Maximum output arc length was about 8-12 inches.

Here is the second SSTC i've built. This was done almost immediately following SSTC 1 and the tesla bug had already bit me quite hard.

This was another TL494 (open loop) based full-bridge SSTC that could run up to 280VAC. Maximum arc length was about 24".

This coil has since seen the scrap pile.

My earliest (intentional) Telsa coil. I was given an old transformer from a dump which in retrospect was an old unpotted NST (neon sign transformer). I used a single static gap with a 12 inch ferrite cored coil of 11 primary and 100 turns secondary giving 2 inch sparks with 26 small ceramic capacitors with 2 strings of 13 x 0.01 uF at 3 kV each. It ran nicely for about 20 years! This photo is a mock up with most of the original parts.

Here is my first conventional spark gap coil.

Specifications:
4" Secondary
15kV/60mA NST (Franceformer)
0.0257uF LTR sized Primary Capacitor
Sychronous Rotary Spark Gap (SRSG)
20" x 5" Toroid (D&M Voltage)

This coil output about 48" arcs.

It has since been scrapped and my wife is using the table as a flower pot stand!

Here is my Mini-Katz conventional spark gap coil.

It uses a modified 4kV/20mA (Franceformer) NST which is modified to output
38mA current.

Output arc now is approximately 13-14 inches. This coil is my most popular coil and has seen the most demonstrations ranging from Corporate to Educational Events, Boy Scouts, and Church Events.

The mighty OLTC II! This is my best performing coil but also the least practical. It's so noisy and dangerous that I hardly ever get the chance to run it.

It is a solid-state coil powered directly from the 240V line which is rectified and voltage doubled to give around 600V DC. This supplies a circuit which is just like an ordinary DC Tesla coil, except the spark gap is replaced by two 600A IGBTs connected in parallel. Due to the low voltage, the primary circuit looks quite different to a SGTC- it has a 14uF cap bank and a 10" single turn primary.

The pic below (taken by thedatastream) shows the 73" spark achieved at the Derby Teslathon this year. To do this I had to use an extra toroid and increase the tank cap to 18uF. (With the single toroid I get around 60")

At the time this coil was being built we didn't know whether OLTCs or DRSSTCs were better. Now we know so I am going to try building a DRSSTC with the same resonator and see how much bigger the sparks get.

Here is one of the first Stereo audio modulated SSTC systems capable of producing full-range audio (approx. 100Hz to 20kHz), The PlasmaSonic I system.

The audio modulated system receives its music source from a CD player and has two identical coils (operating at slightly different frequencies) and produces stunning quality audio and incredible imaging and lower frequency (bass) response.

The key to full-range reproduction was the stereo coil set-up as well as custom designed electrodes which maximize the amount of air that is moved during audio reproduction (although hiss is increased)

My best coil so far, not because it give long sparks, just cause it sounds and looks cool..

The AD-OLTC

Specs:-
The Primary coil 2 turns of 5mm copper tubeing .
Primary cap 2uF MMC

The Secondary 1920 turns 0.225mm enameled copper wire wound on a 4" former , 19" tall..

The Topload 10" Stainless steel sphere. (Two salad bowls from Ikea, but don't let on)

Drive 4 x IGBT's, fired Alternately in pairs.

Max spark length 23"
BPS 10hz - 10Khz

Will also "play" Twinkle Twinkle little star..
