Hi all. It appears that Movidius in collaboraton with Intel have launched a SoC AI inference system on a USB stick (!) For those not familiar with the term, inference essentially means that the system acts a bit like a deep learning system but with less computational requirements. The stick is USB3 and has 4GB LPDDR3 and can do 15-25 inferences per second, equivalent to 100 Gflop/s.
Its an AI accelerator so still needs a powerful PC to run, minimum requirements are about what my laptop can do but it would need upgrading to Ubuntu 16.1> and probably more RAM (8GB) A Raspberry Pi 3 alas won't cut it due to limited memory. see
A possible mod might be to retrofit one or more of these somewhere in the case, rerouting the wiring from my webcam. As it only uses 1W additional cooling would not be needed, although you'd need to find a laptop that has plenty of room in the casing such as C650D or similar. Its a shame that they didn't make this available as a miniPCIe card, as then it would fit in the space normally used by the Wifi.
