Hi. So I finally got some AD500-8 APDs to tinker with.
Hooked one up with 5M series resistor and recommended low current high (36V) supply as I don't want to fry it. These particular ones came with no data sheet which is unusual but given the price not too serious.
As is common with all APDs there is quite a variation in avalanche voltage and these particular ones seem to need 80-160V so 36 is far too low. It is showing some gain though and with a relatively small reverse bias can detect IR pulses from a TV remote at several feet away though its hard to tell performance without a 'scope. Getting 0.2uA quiescent and 1.6uA when pulsed with IR@around 920nm 1cm away from unfocused diode. With a slightly larger SLED its maxing out at 6.4uA with this setup. Now working on getting a better bias supply, will probably end up using an HV850 as these are +/- 60V at Vcc of 4.15V
