the title says it all... is it OK to charge NiMH batteries in a charger that was designed for charging NiCd batteries? It is an old charger that takes about 16-20 hours to charge AA NiCd batteries.

Yes it will be fine, it's what I do also to avoid having to buy a new charger.

To calculate the charging time, take the capacity of the nimh cell (in mAh) times by 1.5 and divide that by the rated current output (mA) of the charger... or just leave them in for a couple of days because the current will be relatively low there's no risk of damage by overcharging.

If your charger has a built in timer, it's another story...

it doesn't really matter, but usually NiMH cells have a far greater energy density than old NiCd cells. like 2 or 3 times. if it takes 20 hours to charge the NiCd...

It works fine as long as you remember to remove the batteries from the charger. NiMh does not stand up to trickle charging as good as NiCd does.
