Anybody else hear the news about all five visible planets being up at the same time? You have to get up before sunrise to see them. It'll be that way for a couple of weeks -- Mercury gets farthest "above" the not-yet-risen sun on about February 7.
My first try was this morning at 6:15. Spotted all the planets immediately, in a clear sky with not too many stars left to confuse the picture. They matched this chart I made last night: sharper: ]feb123.pdf[/file] It's for 6:30 am (PST) on Feb 1, 2, and 3, seen from 37°N (and 122°W). Horizontal scale East, South, West. From left to right: unrisen Sun, Mercury and brilliant Venus by themselves in brightening sky, Saturn (not far from uncharted but similarly bright red star Antares), waning crescent Moon, Mars (v close to moon this morning, and some other star), a whole bunch of empty sky, brilliant Jupiter.
