Researchers at the Duke University (North Carolina, US) created material that makes large objects invisible. So far, the invention is only capable of “deceiving†microwaves.
Properties of the so-called metamaterial depend less on its chemical composition than on the structure of its surface. After covering a copper cylinder 5cm in diameter by a fabric made of this material researchers lost its visual perception in the microwave spectrum, Netzeitung reports.
Electromagnetic waves go round the metamaterial cloak just as water engulfs a round stone, Dr. D. Schurig explains. In his words, the concealing metamaterial consists of fiberglass with copper wire and rings on its surface. They impede wave reflection and at the same time reduce the shadow of an object making it virtually invisible.

Not fantastically new, but interesting reading all the same. The last time I stumbled across this was searching for 'negative refractive index' in wikipedia ^^

If (and it looks like it) you need the engineering to have features comparable with the wavelength of the radiation you wish to hide from then Xray shielding would need sub-atomic sized bits. Even ordinary light will be tricky.
