The earliest motor was probably made by Hero of Alexandria, but the first electric motor was believed to have been built in the UK by Faraday around the middle of the 1800's in the form of a rotating compass in a pulsed magnetic field or so it is said.

A major development was the squirrel cage motor. It corresponded with the AC electrification of industry and homes. This type of induction motor is easy to make. In the first models copper was used as the 'secondary' winding on the rotor. Later, aluminum.
For all intents, the fundamental design hasn't changed in 100 years.
If it burns out, It can be rewound with ease. As scrap, all the metals can be recovered.
I have been reading Audel's, New Electric Library for many years.
There was a time, that knowing all contained in the 10 volumes, and applying it, would place you inline for work, only a few were trusted to do.
These days, such breadth of knowledge might brand you as a threat, unless you were well heeled.
