Hi,
I tried some time ago to make a CW wih some small ceramic caps and a bunch of 10kV diodes bought from ebay. Mounted it in a PVC tube revamped of a Marx generator with some screw-nut supports for fixing everything. See
Connected to a NST output it seems not working at all, my guess is that losses and stray effects are the problems (a lot of pointy things). I only got it working with just 1 stage.
I have like 2-3 days time to spend on this and would like to fix it, my current idea is: - use a flat base like acrylic or so to mount everything the same way. Want to avoid soldering as much as possible. - put everything in a plastic box - fill with oil. I read in another posts that regular sunflower oil can work -> http://4hv.org/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?146435.post, IMPORTANT: could it ignite?
For the output I have like 15 or so 3000V resistors in series. I hope they live for some hours.
I would appreciate any comment or idea to avoid problems. My goal is just make it work, maybe connect it to a jakob ladder.
Off-topic: searching for info I read a discussion explaining that insulation size increases non linearly with voltage, i.e. for 50kV there is really much more insulation need than for 25kV (no the naive double size idea). Where could read more about this?

Oil has to get VERY hot before it ignites, and it smokes before it does. sunflower oil is no exception. My worry with using sunflower oil is it going off, being biodegradable is often good, however rancid oil in your CW multiplier isn't nice! Mineral oil can do just as good a job, and doesn't go off.
The voltage you are insulating is between one end and the other, the longer it is, the more insulation there is, so theoretically there is no need to increase the dielectric strength of the insulation as you increase the number of stages, although you will if you increase the input voltage or move the stages closer together.

If there is leakage at the points, you must see corona. Check the capacitors and the diodes. Some may be short-circuited. The NST voltage may be excessive.
