a through e are various solenoid valves and pumps that I have to turn on and off. I have to switch the system between three states, as indicated in the table below.
a b c d e
doesn't
1 off on matter on off
2 on off on off on
3 off off off on on
Should I try to do this with switches and relays, or go solid state? It is a twelve volt system. The solenoid valves (a b and c) draw less than an amp each. Haven't measured the draw of the pumps (d and e), but say three amps each. The solenoids have grounded body and must be switched from the positive supply. The pumps each have plastic body with two wires.

You could do it with 3 double pole single (or double) throw relays (or if it comes to it, you could use 6 single throw ones) connected such that: 1st relay... pole one goes from +v to B, pole 2 goes from +v to d 2nd relay... pole one goes to a, pole 2 to a and c, pole 2 goes to e 3rd relay... pole 1 goes to d, pole 2 to e
3a dpst relays are pretty cheep, so I would use use those.

To do this witha single switch it looks like a rotary switch is the best bet. Finding a piece of junk equipment with a three or four pole switch would be the shiznit but I may end up having to order one. Edit: I just thought I'd mention a single pole triple-throw switch will do it. Just have to use diodes in the lines to keep the power from backfeeding through the interconnections.
