Nevertheless, says Shanahan, WormSim throws the deep existential questions of embodied connectomes into the light. "I don't think C. elegans is conscious, but if we really did build this for a mouse I can't see any reason to deny suffering and consciousness to a synthetic copy," he says. "It's a deep philosophical question. I can't think of a more important question."
A long time ago I read about a psychological experiment. An instructor placed a small furry big eyed mouse run by a battery on a table. It ran around the table squeaking happily. On the other side of the table a student was seated. The instructor gave him a hammer and told him to smash the mouse. The student hesitated. The instructor told him, that this was just a battery driven mechanical device and urged him to go ahead. Finally the student took the hammer and hit the mouse, but missed it somewhat. The mouse then squealed, moved much more slowly and some red liquid oozed from out of its side. The instructor told the student to hit it again. I don't recall, whether he complied.
