Now this might be an alien fertility sculpture but I guess it might also be one honking big mercury rectifier. They didn't actually mention mercury though, probably didn't want to scare the locals. Pic taken at the Western Power World of energy exhibit in Fremantle, Western Australia.

I used to look at a working Mercury Arc Rectifier in my local science museum, as a static piece of glasswork it's interresting, with the blue glow of mercury vapour it was fascinating.

looks to me like its upside down. as far as large rectifiers go ther is one at the old marion power shovel complex, larger than a full size truck that is still supplying dc power @550 v to the 20 cranes in the 10 acre complex. its been off this week and we are a little frustrated as we have a 2.5 ton welding platen to move and th.e overhead crane is off i will try to find out if it is selinium or mercuryand let you know
