I reverse engineered a flyback driver sold by a company for my large plasma tubes. So far it works great but still have problems getting high current and heating through the primary wound with Litz wire. Any help here modifying my circuit? The FETS run cool but the primary winding runs hot to touch.

Not sure exactly why your primary's overheating, but I've never had problems using ordinary solid wire (vs Litz). Also, unless your flyback has a particularly small core area, I wouldn't use more than 30 turns.

What frequency are you driving the inverter at?

I need help tweaking the schematic design as shown. I did change the primary winding over to 70 turns of magnet wire and there is much less heating of the primary winding and now the only to components that get warm are R7 and the primary. This is a powerful inverter and generates alot of RF. I don't know what the frequency is ? 20-40Khz as I do not have a meter and a DVM gets zapped from all the RF. This thing will drive any donut style silicone doped secondary.

BTW, I use about a 1 mm gap between the core halves with round plexiglass spacers.

I was also wondering how the circuit attached for a higher power version of the PVM 300 that I drew out differs. I am not sure why there is a 555 driving the IR2153 and the need for 12 volts. I see a switch to run 300 v vs 150v. Still wish I knew why this circuit needs to be more complicated than the PVM 300.

Hi Lightening Rod ,

You may reduce the primary heathing with some reduction of the magnetic air gap.

Wath is the size of primary wire ??

Using 26 guage magnet wire. Have notice that the arcs in the plasma are more complex, wiggly and interesting with snake like motions when using Litz wire. The magnet wire gives straight non-undulating arcs. I am experimenting with # windings on primary, different wire types, air gaps and core half sizes small to large. So far I get the most complex slow undulating arcs with smaller air gap, about 80 turns of Litz wire and a medium to large core. The primary winding with Litz hears less and seems more efficient and gives brighter arcs thanagnet wire. Love to hear comments.

Thanks
