Hi..
Found something interesting here. Seems that Sellotape is very effective at picking up radioactive materials, so much so that it removed all the contamination from the front face and glass of that incomplete radium dial clock I found. The paint had long since gone, but it was still hot enough that my counter was picking up counts from 1 foot away and after the tape treatment it was back to normal background levels.
Seems interesting that this would work, needless to say the pieces of tape are now stored safely in a labelled container.
Maybe useful to the folks doing watch repairs, as it is a lot gentler than the solvents normally used and also doesen't generate harmful dust in the process.
As Sellotape is evidently transparent to alphas to some extent and doesen't even affect gammas it might be handy to make a "gamma only" source using pyrolytic graphite backed with Al as a cover and the tape as the backing. The whole thing would then be cased in Epoxy with a lead backing, labelled and marked with the appropriate warnings.
