I just bought a Creative Zen Microphoto Mp3 player, and the type of screen it had on it was an OLED (Organic Light Emmiting Diode) display. I used it for about a week and then i had 2 pixel burnouts and the display was difficult to see in normal daylight. So I took it back to Staples and now i'm debating getting an ipod.
Now I don't know too much about these OLED displays, so i'm wondering if that was normal for them to perform that way, or if i should just go ahead and get an ipod Nano or try buying another Creative with this OLED display. (Any suggestions to other brand's and models are welcome . What are everybody's thoughts on this?

OLEDs are know for a very short lifetime compared to other types. But even if the display was turned on all the time, one week is shorter than what even a really bad OLED display should last. It does not seem that there are any manufacturers that worry about quality anymore so whatever you choose will likely be a bit of a gamble unless you get something that is a couple of years old that has been proved to be good quality.

I did some experiments with the displays of E700 Samsung phones. If you don't mind drastically shortening the lifespan they make fairly bright white LED "panels" (drawing about 80mA at 8V DC) as long as you watch the duty cycle. The failure mode is "creeping death syndrome" as the OLED denatures on heating.
The brightness is comparable with a small fluorescent lamp, and you can also use them as a bargraph if you can figure out how to connect to miniature traces on the glass.
I've had some success with low temp indium alloy as a "glass wetting" solder - the silver epoxy works well but has a tendency to short out.
