I was looking at sci-toys and read about the "simplest steamboat". This steam boat uses a sealed boiler with 2 tubes (2 tubes are only required for filling the boiler, the engine will work perfectly with only 1 tube) running out the back of the boat. As the boiler heats the water in it turns to steam, when it does the expansion forces water out the back of the boat. When the steam gets out of the boiler it hits an area of pipe that just had water in it, this makes the steam condense and refills the boiler with water, by suction, from outside the boat.
My boat uses a coil in the pipe instead of a separate boiler; this means there are no solder joints in the tube, which could leak. Because my exhaust tubes are so short my engine has a high resonant frequency and tends to jitter along making many fast ripples. (my next engine will have longer exhaust tubes to make the engine run at a lower bpm). I have a few pipes in the freezer (full of water) at the moment, I will try to bend some tighter coils this afternoon to see if I can get better results.
