I've got a 2200if 450V capacitor that I'm going to use for a small induction launcher, hewever I am wondering what the main differences/advantages are of using a plastic central pipe as opposed to a thompson style with the metal rods in the center. Would one be likely to have better results in a small design like this?

Hi, Give me the proposed dimensions of your coilgun and I'll run both through my simulator..
Be sure to indicate whether or not the iron core in the center is solid or bundled (so I know how to handle eddy currents in the core).
Off the top of my head, the iron core will generate more force in the tubular projectile for a given coil current than no core at all (for the 100-1000us pulse times encountered in many hobby coilguns)..

Do you intend to build an induction launcher or coilgun? They are very different animals (see links below)...many induction launchers do have central posts, even my first ones did...but I don't use one any more, the aluminum slug fires perfectly straight without it.

I'm building an induction launcher. I already have a decent sized coilgun. I'm going to use something in the center of the projectile to make it go strait, however I'm wondering if there would be any advantage to launching hard disk plates using a bundled iron core in the center.

Ahh so you're thinking about putting a central iron post...all I can say is try it and report back I stopped using central posts as I found them unnecessary - the projectiles go perfectly straight anyway...actually, mine aren't even rings any more - they're solid aluminum slugs.

I havent tried the ferromagnetic core "Thompson" stlye launcher... I was under the impression that this style would help effeciency at low power levels but possibly hurt effeciency at higher power levels. Cant remember were I read that, does that sound correct? Or is it that it helps effeciency while using a smaller 'ring' since it sorta condenses the magnetic field through the smaller ring while a larger disk projectile doesnt need the magnetic field to be shaped any different so long as the coil is matched with the projectile? I might try using a ferromagnetic core if it will help effeciency but I just dont see it being better than a flat sprial / disk projectile.
