I want to build my own display. I found a suitable LCD display and it has a lot of pins. I guess I need a chip to switch to the desired digit. Is this a multiplexor? Would someone give me a chip that is reasonable for switching to one of five digits. I'm planning on using an arduino to send out the appropriate ABCDEFG segment lines.

If it is a 5 digit 7 segment display, I would use something like a 4056
You'd have 1 chip per digit, all 4 input lines connected together then you just strobe the chip/digit you want to update. Total lines would be 4 for data, plus 1 strobe per digit, so 9 lines in total. You could even do something fancy to reduce the number of strobe lines.

I am assembling the parts. I've written the c-code for the arduino already. It will read from -325 to 100F by tenths of a degree. I will power it with a 5v wall adapter.
