Hi
Is there anyway to combine crystal to get high frequency. I'm looking at Link2 and would like to get 450khz from three 153khz crystals.

Like to build this circuit Link2

Thanks

Combining quartz crystals does not work like combining capacitors, resistors or coils. You cannot connect crystals in series or parallel to make them work at a different frequency.

You must find a crystal that it's fundamental oscillating frequency is 450 KHz for the circuit that you specified, since it can't make use of overtone crystals (it will again oscillate at their base frequency).

If you build a crystal oscillator
and 'square' up the output
it will have a very strong 3rd harmonic content
which can be filtered out and amplified.
The link to crystal oscillator that you posted is just what you want, squarewave output for filtering, amplifying/limiting

Of course, 3x 153 = 459 not 450 and I doubt that you could 'pull' the resonant frequency that far off natural

The crystal frequency is normally the parallel resonance frequency
if you make a crystal oscillator using series resonance the frequency will be a little lower

sometimes you can put a filter in the crystal oscillator to force the crystal to operate at it's third harmonic
crystals for this purpose are 'overtone' crystals
but a normal crystal should work in overtone mode. Link2

You could substitute the crystal with an inexpensive 450 kHz ceramic resonator. Murata make one.

Thanks Sulaiman,PSCG

Thanks Proud Mary, found a 500khz resonator, I'm guessing it could be dropped in place of a crystal.

Ceramic resonators will work in most circuits in place of a quartz crystal, though their Q and frequency tolerance are a bit lower.
