The Cheapest and most common is many MOTs,
Somthing that pops up occationally is the transformers from
RF welders, usually about 2000V at 10A or there abouts from what i have seen.

In general HV transformers are hard to get hold of as they are dangerous and have very little uses.

Im persuing the HF transformers such as ferrite as they are compact and fairly cheap somtimes.

the MOT is easily available and has the best power-to-size ratio, it can not run continuously without cooling but for our experiments it usually doesnt matter. so more powerful than a mot are many mots.

Indeed, the only limit is your power supply and your desired output.

I've managed to squeeze 9kVA through 2 MOTs with series resonant caps... For 30 seconds before the smoke clouds began. Drawing this much power the supply cord, ten amp outlet and the wiring all the way back to the switchboard got warm - pretty dangerous if you cannot monitor the temperature of the wiring in the wall (luckily my barn just uses PVC conduit, so it's easy to open it up to check the temperature or slip on a clamp meter).

As others have said, if you don't want to use MOTs, your cheapest option might be rewinding an existing transformer. Perhaps find a cheap welder transformer, keep the mains-voltage primary and remove the high current winding. Some welder transformers are very large, I've seen a few in excess of 10kVA.

The maximum sensible power to draw from a generously sized MOT is around 1 kW, then it lasts usually around 10 minutes of runtime before getting too hot. Usually the power available at a standard house sockets is around 3 kVA, so using more than 3 MOTs is not necessary.
