Interesting idea of the week:- Make a miniature keyring sized Geiger counter that does not beep but instead pulses a vibrate motor from a mobile phone. Short pulses would be ignored but repeated pulses would be very obvious the closer one gets to a dangerous radiation field, with an LCD to display the actual dose and a speech chip to warn audibly just to make sure. The same approach could also be used for 3G and microwaves etc so people can see if they are near a wifi access point etc.
Another related idea, use Stella/Proud Mary's generously donated fluorescent screens and ZP1314's to make a 3 wave (alpha, beta/gamma, X-ray) sensor using my pyrographite based end window method and a modified Aixiz module. Turns out that vacuum can be generated of the required level (0.01atm) using a modified fridge compressor with a peltier cold trap in series according to the folks on the fusor forums.
EDIT:- Yes, running the assembly in a vacuum would certainly boost efficiency. I've confirmed that the 2005 internal USB ISight cameras used on older Mac's with the A3 sensor can be used as alpha sensors, the colour filter used doesen't seem to affect them much. The graphite does need to be very thin indeed, as thin as you can make it and as close to that chip as possible to maximise the conversion efficiency. The sensor is a 640*480 backlight compensated one and putting a small dot of silver scintillator on the back of the graphite would also help.
It might be worth experimenting with multiple corona wires, as this should noticeably increase the sensitivity. A "Flat" tube would also be an interesting experiment as these have been known to be very sensitive indeed if run in a strong kGauss static magnetic field to polarise the gas inside.
EDIT:- Just found
