Hi all. Got these beasties from a nice guy in Leeds on ebay. Three seem to work fine as specified, but the two which don't are "interesting".
One is more orange and exhibits a distinct "flux capacitor" light effect if you run it from a lower voltage than normal with a 10K series resistor and DC voltage of about 140-160V. This may have been caused by overcurrent when testing earlier but the other unfried tube has a similar orange rather than orangey blue like the others and does something very similar. Essentially the glow detaches from the low end of the tube and migrates along it wherever the nearest conductive object is. The size of the glowing region is voltage dependent, and varies depending on where the conducting object is.
Has anyone else ever noticed this? Now all I need is one more the same and a bit of minor hackery.. If anyone else wants to try this, it seems that tubes made in week 6 have the orange glow effect more often than usual.
For those who wonder what this effect looks like, bear with me as my camera battery is deader than dead can be, I had to resort to the time honoured technique of jump starting it with 9V+10K resistor just to get it to charge and that now doesen't work.
EDIT:- Camera may be repairable, bear with me. I also discovered one tube has a hairline spiral crack, which means up to air. Not sure how it generates the ascending dot, the resistance of the wire and surround is less than 1 ohm.
