Bahahaha... I have one of those "Love lamps" here, if it still works. The problem is the base broke, but the lamp was working about a month ago according to Mr Obit.
I did notice that piezo transformers if operated just at resonance can sometimes energise small plasma globes, perhaps painting "I Love You" or something equally icky in transparent paint and then grounding it would make a suitable HV inspired gift?

Now for some hacking. Making a hovering decoration would be amusing but draw too much power.
How about something that detects a person's unique cardiac cycle (ie PQR complex), the Q-T timing etc. Then if detected, plays a custom message and lights up.

Gives a whole new meaning to "that special someone" ... wonder if its been done before?
I did read somewhere about ECG being used as a possible biometric, as it doesen't change (much) at least on the short term if you compensate for pulse rate and SpO2.
EDIT:- Mostly got it working in theory, an infrared LED, shared phototransistor and red LED which upon detecting reflection goes into "pulse detect" mode. if it detects the correct waveform or for that matter any pulsatile waveform it starts "pulsing" in time with the PQR complex using a vibrate motor from a dead mobile phone
