The aforementioned have contributed financially to the continuing triumph of 4hv.org. They are deserving of my most heartfelt thanks.
how do electronic parts work in solidworks? I mean for mechanical modeling of an assembly. I know I can find some parts from the manufacturer and other from users/pools of models, but do I have to measure and draw all the parts I can't otherwise find? Any general CAD tips (any software) for the mechanical side of things? I'm trying to design a DRSSTC inverter completely on the computer before fabricating parts and putting it together

Note, Solidworks should be available through faculty discount programs for instructors and students. It is often one of the more popular long-term malware sources for student acquired copies.
Eagle 6 does 3D rendering now, but the overpriced Altium still has the most massive 3D RF & thermal modeling library for routing PCB designs.

If the component is easy to draw i usually do not bother looking for it at websites. When I do the only one I use is 3dcontentcentral.
Solidworks is the software I use at work.. If you already don't I would advise you to setup good keyboard shortcuts for all the common commands. That alone got me drawing at half the time I used to.
Also, for components that have same shape but different sizes you can create design tables to create the different configuration. Editing it using excel is a must!
A simple export button at Eagle would be very helpful though!

Yea i have had two jobs now that I used Solid works it seems a lot more simple than CAD but I don't remember what I was using with the Touch screen and the Stylus to design that was the cats meow Solid Works does pretty much the Same with Circuits as That free software from Express PCB.
sounds like you use a wacom cintiq which is pretty sweet for anything in which something visual is manipulated. It also increases productivity especially in photo editing and painting. its the best, most natural way, like using pen and paper. I hate using autocad but i love using solidworks. I'm doing just big parts in solidworks for mechanical layout with the pcbs made in eagle. its coming along but now i need to figure out what i'm gonna use for a heatsink. since everything is surplus the ability to easily change the model is very nice
