I've been interested in doing this for a while too, but I've never had the motivation to even start to be bothered, apart from stashing away a few junk laptops with good screens.

This could be the beginning... just been googling and the LVDS is a 40pin connector I think, so time to either find or make some screened multicore. I had no idea you could get desktop video cards with LVDS outputs?

Would be interested to see any links to anyone who has managed to pull this one off.

I guess the other thing will be powering the ccfl backlight. A few years ago when the ccfl inverter in my old Thinkpad laptop failed, I taped a cheap ccfl inverter to the lid of the laptop (the type of ccfl inverter that is intended for powering those computer case lights) and connected it to the tube on the display. It worked quite well, but not sure how long it would have worked for!

So, checklist: Video card with LVDS output, multicore with about 40-50 strands, some kind of 40-50 pin connector, scope the driving voltage for the ccfl backlight and build a little forward converter to do the same thing (probably best to locate it by the screen itself). Power it all from the +/-12v from teh atx psu.

Most of the laptops I've seen have the inverter in the main case of the laptop, but a screen which has the inverter built in would be a bonus.

I intended it as a joke. LVDS video cards and motherboards are available for industrial embedded use, and Kontron make a DVI to LVDS converter board, but they cost more than just buying a new LCD monitor.

Also, there is no standard pinout (that I'm aware of) for laptop LVDS, nor is there a standard way for the panel to describe its timing requirements to the GPU. Since laptops don't have detachable screens, the timings could be hard coded into the BIOS.

I used an 800x600 LVDS panel in one product I designed. The timings were identical to regular SVGA video, and I had a video driver that gave me full control over them anyway. I made my own data cable for the prototype. No screening is needed to make it work, you just have to twist the data and clock pairs.

I believe there is a cheap HDMI to LVDS converter available for the Raspberry Pi.

haha... trust me! Should've looked into it a bit more I guess cheesey

Considering the fact that last year I bought a perfectly decent 17" LCD monitor from a car boot sale for £5, I think I'll just save myself the hassle and use the old laptops to display some of these in the dark cheesey

I also have a fair number of intact panels.
