I got three small laser diodes for $1 each.
Diameter: 6 mm Length (including driver chip): 14 mm Wavelength: 650 nm Operating Voltage: 3v Current Draw: 40 mA Power: 5 mW
There's a 33 ohm resistor soldered to the board that is in series with the blue wire.
I don't really know much about lasers but I suppose these are too small to make a burning laser with?

I have similar units, first 'thing' I made ... 'Predator' - type laser aiming device.
These modules can be easily modulated and/or modified, there is space and holes for a 1N4148 anti-parallel with the laser diode to prevent damage due to accidental or deliberate reverse-polarity connection.
