I wanted to make a taser circuit, not because I want to electrocute someone, but because I want a small HV source (for miniature SGTC etc...). The problem is, I cannot find the transformer I need (audio transformer, 1k:8R transformer, whatever) to complete the circuit, so I started winding one. After realizing how disgusting that job is I decided to ask here if I'm doing it right, because disappointment after all that effort is not something I want, and I would like to quit immediately if I'm making a mistake.
Anyway, the idea was to use NE555 + transformer + voltage multiplier. The transformer is wound on 55mm x 14mm x 6mm AM antenna ferrite bar. I insulated the core with 3 layers of PVC tape, and wound the first layer with 0.2mm enameled copper wire (around 250 turns), and insulated it with another 3 layers of PVC wire. I intend to add 4 more layers on top of that, insulating it with PVC, and then wind primary on top of it.
So, does this project have any future, or should I quit it now?

I think we'll need more details of your project before we can be of much help, but from what you've described you may be better off using a flyback transformer from a TV.
Your 'home made transformer' will, I imagine, be limited to a volt or two per turn, so with 1000 turns you'll get around 1000V maximum.

I already have PWM and flyback finished, but I want something smaller, smaller devices are cooler.
check this out, it has some instructions on how to wind it, but I tried it already and it didn't work, so I decided to add flyback-like secondary consisting of several turns.
So you say it is possible to get 1000V by doing it the way I described?
I would be more than satisfied if I could pull out that much out of it. There will be voltage multiplier after it, so with 1kV I could get pretty decent sparks!

I have heard of people using ferrite bar before. I'm not sure what frequency to suggest if using a 555 timer though.
A few layers of insulating tape should be ok.
Wind each layer of secondary from the same end (ie, wrap some tape over the first layer, then take the wire back to the beginning, wind some more tape over it, then wind the next layer).
I'd wind tape over the whole ferrite rod first, and again between each layer, just for extra insulation.

Did that already.
Well I have made a cute PWM for flybacks, I will experiment. :) It goes up to 30kHz, hopefully it will be sufficient. If not, I'll just play with 555 circuit values.

Njubster, do you have access to the oil-can type ignition coils in your country? you can cut the metal tube-case open pull out the secondary, put in your ferrite bar, and then wind a simple primary. then youd have a 4cm round by 6cm long cylinder.
